How to Clean a Vape TankUpdated 3 hours ago
Use the instructions below to do a quick rinse of your vape tank, a full deep clean, or to clean your tank when switching between e-liquid flavours. A clean tank gives you better flavour, better vapour, and a longer-lasting device.
Quick Rinse
Routine maintenance
Do this every time you change your e-liquid flavour, or at least once a week if you use the same flavour. It takes under 15 minutes and stops residue building up into something harder to shift later.
- Switch off your device and detach the tank from the mod.
- Empty any remaining e-liquid from the tank.
- Unscrew and remove the coil. Set it aside and do not rinse it under water.
- Disassemble the remaining parts: mouthpiece (drip tip), top cap, glass section, and base.
- Rinse each component under warm, not hot, running water. Run water through the airflow holes and chimney to flush out loose residue.
- Dry each part with a paper towel, then leave to air dry on a clean surface for 15 to 20 minutes. No moisture should be visible before you reassemble.
- Reassemble the tank, refit your coil, and refill with e-liquid.
Deep Clean
For heavy buildup
Do this once or twice a month, whenever you change your coil, or immediately if you notice a burnt taste, reduced vapour, restricted airflow, or flavour from a previous e-liquid bleeding through.
- Switch off your device and detach the tank. Empty it and fully disassemble as above.
- Fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of washing-up liquid. You can substitute with isopropyl alcohol for tougher residue.
- Place all tank components, except the coil, into the bowl and soak for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Use a cotton swab to clean the threading, airflow slots, and hard-to-reach corners. A soft toothbrush works well on the interior of the base.
- Rinse every component thoroughly under warm running water. If you used alcohol or washing-up liquid, rinse twice to make sure nothing remains.
- Dry each part with a paper towel, then air dry completely for at least 30 minutes before reassembling.

Switching Between Flavours
When a quick rinse is not enough
If you are moving from a strong flavour such as tobacco, menthol, coffee, grape, or cinnamon to something lighter, a quick rinse will often not clear it. The old flavour lingers in the wick and will muddy your new one.
- Complete a full deep clean as described above.
- Reassemble with a fresh coil rather than the used one. Flavour absorbed into old cotton will not wash out and a new coil is the only reliable fix.
- Fill with your new e-liquid and leave the tank to sit for 5 to 10 minutes before vaping. This lets the wick fully saturate and primes the coil properly.
A Note on Coils
Coils are not fully cleanable in the same way tank components are. The cotton wicking inside a replaceable coil absorbs residue that water cannot fully remove. Rinsing a tired coil might extend its life by a couple of days but it will not restore it properly.
If you still get a burnt taste after a full clean and refill, the coil needs replacing, not more cleaning. Other signs it is time to swap: darker vapour than usual, reduced cloud production, or a gurgling sound when you draw.
When to Clean
Quick reference
- Changing e-liquid flavour: Quick rinse at minimum. Full deep clean when switching between very different flavours.
- Weekly (same flavour): Quick rinse to prevent residue buildup.
- Changing your coil: Deep clean. Reset everything at the same time.
- Burnt or stale taste: Deep clean immediately, then check whether the coil needs replacing.
- Restricted airflow: Deep clean. Residue is likely clogging the airflow slots.
- Tank leaking after reassembly: Deep clean and inspect O-rings.
- Old flavour bleeding through: Deep clean plus a fresh coil.
