How Many Puffs of a Vape Equal a Cigarette?Updated 19 days ago

Wondering how vaping compares to smoking? While there is no single exact figure, because devices, e-liquids, and individual habits all vary, we can give you a useful guide to understanding the relationship between puffs and cigarettes.

The short answer. A 2ml pod of 20mg nicotine salt e-liquid contains roughly the same total nicotine as a pack of 20 cigarettes. A cigarette typically lasts 10 to 15 puffs, while a 600-puff disposable or pod is broadly comparable to around 20 cigarettes in nicotine content. However, how much nicotine your body actually absorbs depends on your vaping style, device, and e-liquid type.

Nicotine in Cigarettes vs Vapes

Understanding the comparison

A traditional cigarette contains around 8 to 12mg of nicotine, though the amount your body actually absorbs is much lower, typically around 1 to 2mg per cigarette, because most nicotine is lost through combustion and exhaled smoke.

E-liquids are measured differently. Nicotine strength is shown in milligrams per millilitre (mg/ml), and the most common strengths available in the UK are:

  • 3mg/ml - low strength, suited to light vapers or those stepping down
  • 6mg/ml - light to medium, common in shortfill and DTL devices
  • 12mg/ml - medium to high, suitable for moderate smokers switching to vaping
  • 20mg/ml - maximum UK strength, typically nicotine salts, suited to heavier smokers

To work out the total nicotine in a pod or tank, multiply the strength by the volume. A 1ml tank at 12mg/ml contains 12mg of nicotine in total, broadly comparable to the nicotine content of one cigarette. A 2ml pod at 20mg/ml contains 40mg, which is broadly comparable to a pack of 20 cigarettes.

Absorption rates differ: Vaping generally delivers nicotine less efficiently than smoking, particularly with freebase nicotine at lower strengths. Nicotine salts at 20mg/ml are absorbed more quickly and more efficiently, which is why they are recommended for people switching from cigarettes.

Puffs vs Cigarettes

A rough guide by device type

Another way to think about it is by puff count. A cigarette typically lasts around 10 to 15 puffs. Based on that:

  • A 600-puff disposable or pod at 20mg/ml is broadly equivalent to around 20 cigarettes (one pack) in total nicotine content
  • A 300-puff pod at 20mg/ml sits closer to 10 cigarettes
  • A 600-puff pod at 10mg/ml contains less total nicotine, making it more comparable to 10 cigarettes
Puffs are not a perfect measure. Vape puffs vary a lot in length. A quick 2-second draw delivers far less nicotine than a long 4-second draw. Puff counts on packaging are based on a standard draw length, so your actual experience may differ.

Which Nicotine Strength Matches Your Smoking Habit?

If you are switching from cigarettes to vaping, choosing the right nicotine strength is the most important decision you can make. Too low and cravings will persist. Too high and vaping will feel harsh or overwhelming.

  • Under 10 cigarettes a day - start with 10mg/ml nicotine salts or 6mg/ml freebase
  • 10 to 20 cigarettes a day - 20mg/ml nicotine salts are usually recommended
  • Over 20 cigarettes a day - 20mg/ml nicotine salts in a device that produces more vapour, or a higher-frequency vaping pattern

How Many Puffs a Day Is Normal?

There is no universal answer, as vaping habits vary as much as smoking habits do. As a general guide:

  • Light smokers (under 10 cigarettes a day) tend to vape around 60 to 100 puffs a day
  • Moderate smokers (10 to 20 a day) tend to take around 100 to 200 puffs
  • Heavier smokers may vape upwards of 200 to 300 puffs a day in the early stages of switching

If you find yourself vaping far more than you smoked, it is worth considering stepping up your nicotine strength so you reach satisfaction faster and vape less overall. The goal for most people switching from smoking is to gradually reduce nicotine intake over time, not to vape more.

Switching from cigarettes? Most people find nicotine salts at 20mg/ml in a simple pod kit the closest match to the speed and satisfaction of a cigarette. See our guide to choosing your first vape kit.
